The Pilsener Cup. LIGA (Quito, the capital of Ecuador) v. DEPORTIVA CUENCA. This is my first professional soccer game. I end up sitting with the enemy--Liga--because my friend is from Quito. Never have I seen so much craziness at a game. In the end, Cuenca won, 2 to 1. You can imagine, by the passion here, the extreme state of depression the Liga fans entered once their team lost.
Quito fans put on their own pre-game show by lighting sparklers and fireworks right in the middle of the crowd. Throughout the game I think I may have heard 15 different Liga chants (the name of the team from Quito). Some of these involved running up and down the bleachers together, pushing everyone down in the meantime. Good times.
